When the new ministry year started last August, I scanned my volunteer list and got a little nervous: half of my Small Group Leaders this year are teens. I’ll admit I had images of texting kids rolling in 15 minutes late wearing anything but our ministry T-shirt.
Boy, was I wrong.
These students are the most impressive bunch of young Small Group Leaders I have ever encountered.

  • The first two leaders to arrive every Sunday are students. They come early to help me set up the space before their groups arrive.
  • We have one Small Group of all boys. They average 10-12, 2nd grade boys each week and are led by three male student leaders. The high-fives flow freely throughout the group and I overhear plenty of sports and video game talk. The boys love these guys.
  • Two student cousins lead one Small Group. They are so consistently enthusiastic that we’ve earmarked them as the group to welcome visiting kids. On the off chance one of these leaders can’t come, they always find a responsible sub to take their place.

How about you? Who are the Small Group Leaders (student or adult) that you can’t wait to celebrate? Tell us about them as a comment to this post. One commenter will be chosen as the winner of a free ticket to Orange Conference 2012! Winner will be selected on Monday, March 12.
Even if you don’t win the conference ticket, keep looking for ways to celebrate and encourage your Small Group Leaders. We know they are the heroes of children’s ministry!
